Historic Glacier National Park: The Stories Behind One of America’s Great Treasures is the second book I’ve read in this series. I fell in love with the Stories Behind One of America’s Great Treasures series because of how they are written. Instead of trying to describe the history of the park from it’s founding to recent years; each chapter is about a specific theme and it follows that theme from beginning to end. The chapters are written as stories – easy to follow and interesting.
Historic Glacier National Park includes chapters on:
- The Geology of Glaciers
- The Great Northern Railway (which built many of the park’s initial structures)
- George Bird Grinnell
- Park Rangers and Fighting Wildfires
- Going-to-the-Sun Road
- and more
It was eerie reading about Lyman Sperry, Sperry Chalet’s namesake, as the chalet was being burned to the ground by a wildfire on August 31, 2017, one week after we visited Glacier.
I highly recommend reading this book if you are planning a trip to Glacier National Park and would like to learn more about the history of the park.
