Historic Acadia National Park by Catherine Schmitt

Before Lizzie and I left Acadia, we made one last stop at the Visitor Center. I wanted to learn more about the park I had just spent 4 days exploring, but could not decide on which book to purchase. I was thrilled to learn that the woman working the counter read the books in her spare time. I purchased Historic Acadia National Park based on her recommendation. It was the first book I read in The Stories Behind One of America’s Great Treasures series andĀ  I fell in love with them.

The book covers a lot of Acadia National Park’s history including how it was cobbled together from donations of land from private residences. It was also interesting to learn about the formation and evolution of the hiking trails, as well as Rockefeller’s building of the carriage roads within the park.
