Deep Survival by Laurence Gonzales

The Hike Like A Woman Adventure Book Club found a poignant read for this month’s book in Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why.

Laurence Gonzales relies on personal experience, first hand accounts from survivors, and decades of research on accidents to get to the bottom of what makes someone a survivor. The conclusion he comes to is eye opening – it’s not necessarily the high performance athlete or former military that survive; sometimes it’s the 17 year old girl with no wilderness experience who adapts to her environment as it changes.

I highly recommend reading this book.

“We can live a life of bored caution and die of cancer. Better to take the adventure, minimize the risks, get the information, and then go forward in the knowledge that we have done everything we can.”
